Organization is the hands-on way to make a fresh start in the new year. Make 2014 the year your home is transformed from cluttered and haphazardly organized to well styled and welcoming. This month we will be featuring Claire Hooper’s home as an inspiration for all your organization projects. Lesson #1: Custom Cabinetry Allows for StorageHooper achieved her home’s clean look by mixing neutral palettes with minimal clutter, thanks to optimal use of built-in cabinetry.“Every single thing we did was custom,” she says. For example, Hooper’s daughter sought a built-in bed, so Claire sketched out the basic desired design and the family worked with a cabinetmaker to create it.Not only does the built-in bed make room for more items in her daughter’s room, but another secret use of space is found below the mattress.“The drawer underneath opens up and contains another twin bed with a mattress for guests to sleep on,” Hooper says. Likewise, the kitchen—formerly a drab, outdated look from the 1960s—was updated with extra cabinets and drawers that allow for storage of the family’s many dishes, pots and pans.
